5 cheap islands for holidays in 2024

John KarkalatosUPDATED January 6, 2024

The high prices have reached an impasse in 2024 making affordable island holidays more challenging than ever. From my experience I recommend 5 islands that combine to a satisfactory degree cheaper accommodation, cheap transition and cheap transportation options.

1. Poros

Poros

This Saronic island is separated by only a few meters of sea from the village Galatas on the coast of Argolida. You can go by flying dolphin from the port of Piraeus, by road with your vehicle or even by intercity bus for greater savings. From Galatas you get the ferry-boat and in 5 minutes you have reached the town of Poros. It is not necessary to have a vehicle because the distances within the city are short. The nearest beach is Kanali so all that remains is to choose where you are going to stay.

2. Lefkada

Lefkada

The only island that you can reach by road is in the Ionian islands. Because it is large you need to have a vehicle to visit the popular beaches of the west side such as Kathisma and Pefkoulia. The most famous beaches, Egremnoi and Porto Katsiki, can be visited by excursion boat from Nydri. Don't forget that going to Lefkada you don't need to cross the Rio-Antirio bridge (the tolls are pretty expensive) but you can cross Korinthiakos gulf with the much cheaper ferry-boats.

3. Amorgos

Amorgos

An affordable solution because you don't need to have a vehicle. Both Katapola and Aegiali have a beach (in Katapola you take a boat to Maltezi beach). My personal opinion is that staying in Katapola is better for a number of reasons. It is more vibrant, easier to visit the most popular attractions, Chora and the Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa, while excursions for swimming on the south side of the island, Kato Meria, are organized by the local transport.

4. Kos

Kos

Kos may be far but is one of the most advantageous solutions for budget holidays. Enjoy the historic town of Kos and the unsurpassed sandy beaches with accommodation in all inclusive hotels (breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided). Since it is a large island it is better to go around by scooter. If you do not rent a vehicle the island's public transportation can take over your transport to the most famous beaches of Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari.

5. Agistri

Agistri

A breath away from the port of Piraeus is tiny Agistri. A peaceful island with a pine tree landscape and wonderful beaches. The distances are very short. In Skala the beaches are quite attractive. For your transportation and going to the beaches you can use the bus that operates in the summer months.
