In order not to pay dearly for your holidays in Santorini and not to spoil your dream that you have probably been waiting for a long time to come true, read below the 7 tips I recommend to travel smartly and affordably avoiding the traps the island hides.

1. Book as early as possible, due to over-tourism if you book last minute only the most expensive accommodation will be available. To find cheaper accommodation you need to book as early as you can, even from the previous winter to get ahead of the bargains.

2. Avoid traveling in the high season, that's June to August when prices are at their peak. Prefer to travel before June or after August, a period when the weather is warm enough without the heat of summer, to cut your expenses significantly.

3. Avoid restaurants overlooking the caldera. They are pretty much more expensive than those outside the caldera, just avoid them.

4. For your transportation, use the Santorini local buses. It is an alternative and reliable means of transportation. In the summer, the routes are enough to any part of the island, beaches and villages, while the ticket price is affordable.

5. Do not stay in an accommodation with a view of the caldera, the reason is obvious, the magnificent view is literally paid for in gold, accommodation is cheaper in the coastal resorts Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos.

6. Santorini doesn't only have expensive restaurants but also lots and lots of souvlaki and fast food, so you can eat super cheaply and fill up for less than 10 euros a day per person.

7. The famous wines of Santorini can also be found in the supermarkets for as little as 4 euros and are much cheaper than drinking them in a bar.
