Nafplio is definitely not a classic Christmas destination but if you want to spend picturesque and romantic Christmas and a New Year's Day near Athens, then Nafplio is one of the top choices.

Above is the Instagram Reel I shot a few days before Christmas and it depicts the most important things the city has to show at this time. The Christmas tree in Syntagma Square is a spot for photos. Do not forget that the first Christmas tree in Greece was decorated in Othon's Palace in Nafplio in 1833 as well as the first New Year's Eve party. Both customs were brought by the Bavarians.

The central alleys and squares are decorated, the main street, Trion Navarchon square, Filellinon square and Amalia's Avenue. There are plenty of places to enjoy a hot drink, the most popular being Amalia Avenue and Syntagma Square.

One more advice I have to give is that in winter people don't frequent the harbour, but gather in the alleys of the old town where the atmosphere is warmer.

So if you wish to visit a Christmas destination near Athens, Nafplion will not disappoint you.
